Excerpt:
The villagers were dressed in simple tunics made from roughly woven wool and wore masks of stark white paint, which made their eyes appear as black dots, cut out from the mask and discarded. Many of them had adorned their hair with flowers and the path was littered with those blooms that had fallen free.
The old man marched up to James.
“What do you think you’re doing!” he demanded to know, shaking his finger at James. “And on this of all days!”
James felt his muscles tense.
“I’m terribly sorry,” James replied with just a touch of sarcasm in his voice. “If you can direct me to a phone, I’ll leave you lot to your little…” He waved his hand dismissively at the procession which had now come to a stop. “…performance.”
The old man scowled at him. His red rimmed eyes became dark shadows beneath his heavy brow.
“Do you have a phone?” asked James raising his eyebrows. “I’m rather late for a meeting and I have no idea where I am.” He looked around. “Where am I?”
The old man stared at James as though he were speaking a foreign language.
James shook his head in frustration.
“Be on your way stranger,” said the man, looking James up and down, “and keep off our tumuli. Show some respect!”
James threw his arms up and rolled his eyes.
“Whatever,” he said doing an abrupt about face. “Bloody idiot!”
In desperation James reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his mobile phone. He tried it again, holding it up as high as he could reach, but there was not even the faint flicker of a signal.
His arms dropped to his sides. He scoured the forest to his right and the village and open fields to his left. That direction seemed his best bet. He dropped the mobile into the inside pocket of his jacket and was about to head off when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
He frowned. What did the old fart want now?
“What?” he snapped as he turned around.
But it wasn’t the old man. Instead it was a rather startled woman in her early sixties. The white of her face accentuated her yellowed teeth, making her seem slightly ghoulish.
“Where are you from?” she asked, placing her hand on his arm.
James looked down his nose at the woman’s hand, wanting her to remove it, but when he looked at her, at her eyes, he detected a great sadness in them. It was almost as if she was hoping for a particular answer.
“London,” he replied.
The old woman’s eyes began to water. There was a quiver to her lips.
“London?” Her voice was no more than a whisper. “And pray tell how did you get here?”
James went to step away and felt the woman’s grip tighten.
“Oh please, dear boy. Tell me how you got here.”
“In my car. It broke down somewhere around here. That’s what I’m trying to do now. Find a phone. Your friend over there…” He nodded towards the dispersing crowd. “…was about as much help as a plaster on a shark bite.”
“Then you don’t know, do you?” she said.

Wayne Mansfield is a resident of Perth, Western Australia. Over the past six years he has had many of his erotic novellas and books published in the US, the UK and also his native Australia.
