Caroline sighed. “They sent me back to the convent. I had nowhere else to go, and I had no money. The Mother Superior was furious. I was confined to my room, only allowed out for bible classes and Mass. I was constantly told that I was a wicked sinner, and would go straight to hell. The only hope for me was to take my vows, and live a life of purity from that moment on.”
“Seems like you were brainwashed.”
Caroline looked at Mike, and nodded. “I was. Then, and for the next 12 years.”
“What caused you to change your mind?”
“Jo did. We sort of kept in touch over the years. Holiday cards, and all that. Then she came to visit, and we went out for lunch one day. It was very strange for me, as I hadn’t been outside the convent in nearly 15 years. I knew a little of what went on, of course, but chatting to Jo opened my eyes. I told her a little about how I lived, and she seemed horrified. She said she didn’t understand how I could live with such a bunch of hypocrites. I already knew about the Irish bishop’s mistress and the priest and the cover up, so I was already getting disillusioned.”
“What did you do?”
“Jo was wonderful. She saw how unhappy and torn I was, and she said that she would get me out of there. One day under pretext of meeting Jo for lunch, I just walked out and never went back. I stayed with Jo and Esther whilst I found my feet.”
Mike raised an eyebrow. “How did you find their relationship?”
“At first, I was shocked. I never knew such things went on. But talking with them, I realized that there had been several lesbians in the convent. I just hadn’t recognized the signals. I know that I don’t have any feelings for women, so Jo suggested that I should try sex with a man again.”
She raised her face, and looked Mike in the eye.
“I told her that I wasn’t too bothered, as I hadn’t enjoyed it that much anyway. Then she told me that she knew someone who would show me the way, so to speak, and here I am.”
Mike stood, and reached for Caroline’s hand which he held as she rose from the chair, and faced him.
Mike leaned forward, and kissed her forehead.
“We can take this at your pace. If you’re uncomfortable at any time, just say. We aren’t going to do anything that you don’t want to do. OK?”
Caroline nodded, moved against him and put her arms round his neck. She looked into Mike’s eyes again as he put his arms around her, and they kissed, gently, on the lips.
“Could we turn the light off, please Mike? I’m a bit shy.”
“Of course,” said Mike. “Tell you what, I need a pee. Why don’t you hop into bed while I’m out?”
“Thanks. But can I use the bathroom first?”
While Caroline was out, Mike turned the bed down and turned out the light. When he got back from his own bathroom break, he shed his robe in the darkness and got into bed.
He reached over to Caroline and stroked her shoulder. They moved towards each other, and kissed. They shuffled closer together and their bodies touched.
