Excerpt:

Closing his eyes for a while, he dreamed of lying in the ground, feeling grass against his cheek and beneath his fingers. Butterflies and bees crowded his thoughts, dipping over sweet smelling flowers. The idea of sunlight warming his flesh made him smile, almost as though he could truly feel it. She came to him then, just as she always did, bounding through the open spaces of his imagination. White, sleek and free, she ran where he could not. The thought of her comforted him. Jack opened his eyes again, staring at the empty whitish surface before him. His eyes drifted out of focus until the spots of dirt and grease seemed to move and shift of their own volition. Then he saw her properly, emerging from the flat boredom of the wall, her long ears twitching and her eyes bright.

“My lady hare” he breathed reverently.

Her presence brought the only calm and respite in his life. Simply looking upon her seemed to ease his discomfort. No matter what happened to him, she remained untarnished and uncaged.

“My poor Jack,” she whispered. “You are very sad today, I think.”
“I am.”
“It is spring outside, and if you listen carefully, you can hear the hungry cries of fledgling birds.”
Jack strained his ears. She was right. There was a faint sound of chirruping coming from somewhere.
“You can hear the sap rising in the trees and all the buds unfurling. You can feel the greenness of it all seeping in through the walls and into your skin.”
“I wish I could run with you,” he said.
“You will. I promise.”
“Only when I’m dead. I’m not sure if they’re trying to drive me mad, or kill me. Do you know? Do you know what will happen to me?”
“I do not know the future. They are trying to look after you, Jack. You’ve been very ill. You should never have come back. I tried to warn you, but you would not listen.”
“Why did I ignore you then?”
“Because you thought it was your duty.”
“And was it?”
“Only you can say, Jack.”
