So this is the famous Lance Heat, hmm? Kunimi thought with an inward snicker as he watched the girls run towards the stage only to be pushed back by some security guards. So much for having them behave themselves in public. Helena was faring no better as she all but leaned even closer to the stage herself. But she was a grown woman and would have to curb her enthusiasm. Kunimi took another look at the performer on the stage and had reluctantly to agree that he was quite the looker. With that hair and that smile – who could resist a guy like that? Was he a new actor? He had definitely never heard of him before.
“And I’m sure you are all ready to see the brains behind all the magic you see, don’t you?!” Lance cried out as he held up the microphone to listen to their resounding replies of ‘YES!’
He laughed. “All right then! Without further ado, it’s my great honor and pleasure to introduce to you, the one, the only, Joshua Matthew Seaver!”
The cheers were loud again as all the students and staff rose to their feet to welcome the handsome young heir. And as soon as he stepped onto the stage, their cheers grew deafening…but to Kunimi, he could see and hear nothing at all.
Images – like persistent and incessant pests – flashed through his mind as he stared at the blond standing high and above him. There was the bleeding Joshua who had stood up to the bullies back in grade school. There was the Joshua who had shared his lunches with him after school each day. There was the Joshua who had spent countless summer vacations with him. The Joshua he had kissed and touched with the inexperience of youth. The Joshua he had fallen helplessly in love with but most importantly, the Joshua that had betrayed him. His hands tightened into fists in his pockets as he gritted his teeth. He tried to tell himself that his heartbeat wasn’t quickening in excitement at seeing this man after so long. He tried to tell himself that he wasn’t welcoming back the pleasant and happier times they had shared. He had to remember the bitterness and betrayal he had felt. He had to live on that or he would find himself…
Falling in love all over again.
