As the figure drew closer, she took in finely boned features and an air of supreme confidence.
“All right there, my pretty?” the woman called out.
“Afternoon,” Tabitha replied reluctantly. She had enjoyed looking, but did not feel equal to a conversation.
The woman stopped and studied her, her expression suggesting both pleasure and surprise.
“Is there a problem,” Tabitha asked, not liking the scrutiny.
“Well now,” the woman began, but went no further. An enigmatic smile tugged at her lips. “You tell me.”
Tabitha shrugged, aware of her own sweat and dirt. She had no desire to be looked at that way.
“Ah, but you aren’t all right, are you pet?” The woman squatted down. “The curse is on you.”
Tabitha flushed and wondered if she had leaked blood into her clothes. She hated people knowing and could find no words to answer with.
“There’s no shame in it, pretty one. It’s natural. We all do it.” The gypsy woman reached out, her long fingers covering Tabitha’s aching stomach. Her touch brought sweet relief. “Oh, there’s rage enough in you; I can feel it.”
“No you aren’t. I can see it in your eyes. Pain, and need and...something else. Hunger, perhaps. Longing.”
Unable to bear the attention and intimacy, Tabitha turned her face to one side, looking along the path.
“There’s ways to ease you,” the woman said, her voice lower, husky.
Her tone made Tabitha shiver. “I don’t need anything.”
She stood. “Oh, but you do. If the moon draws you out again tonight, look for me here.”
Tabitha was about to protest that she wouldn’t, but the woman had walked away. Each step made her a little less substantial, and before she reached the gate, the last impression of her faded away like fog in sunlight.
“I imagined it,” Tabitha said aloud, needing the sound of her own voice. “Sunstroke, maybe.” Her heart said otherwise. She still felt the cool touch of those fingers. Something other than pain stirred deep in her belly, as though inside her, a slumbering entity had stretched, close to waking. She shivered, and thought about the jobs that needed doing. Work would keep it asleep, keep it tame and safe. You’re going crazy.
