The night was dark. A thick blanket of summer rain-cloud obscured the starry skies and blocked the light of a full moon. A line of street lamps stood like sentinels, casting small circles of light on the drying grass by the road. Down a small bank, towards the twin lakes at the heart of Hyde Park, there was a large grove of trees and shrubs, surrounded by a ring of irises and pansies. The area was shrouded in darkness.
Every now and again a wild duck on one of the lakes let out a series of quacks before settling again. The only other sound to break the silence of the night was that of a stiff summer breeze racing through the leaves of the many trees which grew around the edge of the park and in small pockets within its boundaries. The light of the public toilet was on but the building was empty. Any activity there had long since ceased. It was too dangerous to enter the small building at night. The police often raided it and so did drunken thugs on their way home from a night at the nearby Highgate Pub.
By day the park was a mecca for married couples who picnicked by the twin ornamental lakes and watched their children playing on the playground equipment. Single men and women took their dogs for walks, doing endless laps around the lakes while talking on their mobile phones or listening to music on their iPods. Just about every Saturday there were one or two wedding parties being photographed amidst the lush foliage of the bushes and colourful floral displays which made an ideal backdrop for such a memorable occasion.
At night, however, it was an entirely different world.
At the centre of the grove, behind the flowers and shrubs, there was a clearing of about three or four metres square in area. If you didn’t know about it, you’d never find it. You’d never even know it was there. You had to manoeuvre your way through the flowers at one particular point to find the hidden entrance.
That night, since it was so dark, the small clearing had been busy, though it was now well after one o’clock in the morning and most of the men who frequented the area had now gone home. After a succession of twosomes and threesomes, the small, secluded area was now silent, although two shadowy figures remained. One of the men, moaning almost inaudibly, was leaning on a branch, his shirt in one hand and his pants down around his ankles.
