“Who are you? What are you doing here?”
A loud voice startled me so badly i jumped. A flashlight beam was directed into my eyes. While rehearsing this moment in my mind, i had come up with a number of excuses and explanations but in my surprise, all of them fled my mind.
“i'm…i'm…,” i stuttered.
“This is Bill's office.”
my blood ran cold when i realized it wasn't Mr. Sutcliffe standing there. Where was he? Who was this?
The overhead lights came on and a portly man with curly gray hair, an expensive suit and wire-rimmed glasses stood in a doorway i had seen in my earlier visits but never told where it led. What frightened me most wasn't my being discovered, but the pistol he pointed at me.
“I'm a friend of Mr. Sutcliffe's. He asked me to meet him here.” i managed to find my voice.
“Liar!” he snapped. “Bill isn't here. He told me something like this might happen.”
my heart sank. Had Mr. Sutcliffe set me up, led me into a trap?
“you were on his computer! you were searching for our company secrets, weren't you?” His voice turned to a hiss as he approached. “you're a spy!”
“No, i swear i'm not. Really, i was supposed to meet Mr. Sutcliffe –”
“Silence!” he roared. “Back away from the desk.” He pointed the gun at my head. i got to my feet and took a few steps away. He glanced at the computer screen as he advanced on me so he could not have missed the game i was playing but his expression never changed.
“Take off your clothes.”
“Excuse me, sir?”
“You heard me. Strip!” he bellowed. “I don’t' know what weapons you might have hidden or maybe you've already got some files downloaded on a flash disk in your pockets.
Within seconds, i stood naked in front of him.
“On your stomach. Now.”
