EBook formats and eBook Readers

EBooks don't exist in just one format. There are several formats on the market and every one of them needs its own program (reader software is free!) with which you can read the books.

The following file formats are distributed by loveyoudivine Alterotica

.html files - Internet Browser
.prc files - Mobipocket
.lit files - Microsoft Reader
.pdf files - Adobe's Acrobat Reader
.lrf files - Sony Reader
EPUB - Universal format
HTML Zip - html format in a zip file

Here is a more detailed explanation of the various formats offered by loveyoudivine:

Adobe PDF

Characteristics: eBooks, which have been converted into PDF (Portable Document Format) can be read and printed out with any operating system. In the course of time this format from the company Adobe has established itself in the net as a standard form of exchanging documents. In the meantime even PDF files can be encoded and although they have already been cracked, they therefore offer a growing security for eBooks.

Disadvantage: the rigid way of presenting the pages, which many have found disadvantageous. EBooks can only be displayed with Adobe Reader, the only reader software, which reads PDFs. Reader software:

Platform: Windows PC Computer, Windows Tablet, Macintosh Computer, Linux Computer, Unix Computer, Palm OS PDA

HTML

Characteristics: You don't need any special reading devices or gadgets for html documents. HTML eBooks can be read with any internet browser, e.g. Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape Navigator, etc. Disadvantage: No bookmark function possible. The page, which you read last, won't be shown again when you reopen the eBook. This disadvantage can be offset by using a free Multi-eBook-Reader (see further down), which can read, display and present html without a problem and in such a way as to be very convenient for the reader.

Reader software: Internet browser Internet Explorer for your Windows PC or Windows Tablet.

Microsoft Reader (lit)

Characteristics: Ebooks which need the Microsoft reader are 100% compatible with Windows computer as well as Pocket PCs. The eBooks have, thanks to the new clear type technology, the same appearance on a display as the words in a printed book.

Disadvantage: You can't print your eBooks!

Reader software:

Platform: Windows PC Computer, Pocket PC, Windows Tablet. Careful: not readable with a Palm or MAC. Activating the MicrosoftReader: Activation is the name for the process that ties together information from your Microsoft Passport account and your hardware device(s).

Activation uses this information to create a permission code that's stored on your device. This permission code enables you to access so called premium eBook contents which means eBooks in secured, safe or encrypted formats which are therefore copy protected.

Activation upgrades your copy of Microsoft Reader to let you read premium eBook titles that are copy-protected by publishers at the "Owner Exclusive" level. When you activate Microsoft Reader, you identify yourself as the person who will be using your reading device. If you don't activate, you won't be able to read premium ebooks in the Microsoft Reader format (=lit, stands for literature) To help protect copyrights, most commercial eBooks use innovative technologies to help ensure that they're available only to the purchaser.

Mobipocket

Characteristics: You can read its eBooks with a PDA (= Personal Digital Assistant) as well as with a Windows PC Computer or Franklin eBookMan. All you need is to install the Mobipocket Reader software, which is a Multi-ebook-Reader by the way. It reads more than one eBook-Format, for example HTML, plain text (.txt), rich text (.rtf) and Word documents (.doc)

Disadvantage: You can't print your eBooks!
